ThinFire Shelf Paper

A heat-resistant light weight ceramic impregnated paper, ThinFire shelf paper provides excellent separation between kiln shelf and glass in kiln firing applications up to 1600 degrees Fahrenheit.

Bullseye ThinFire Shelf Paper—now even easier to use

It’s different, but only on the surface.

Our popular ThinFire Shelf Paper, the separator that’s quicker and easier to use than shelf primer, now features a printed pattern of the Bullseye logo on the bottom side. The logo pattern does not affect glass or kiln shelves. Nor does it change the way ThinFire works in any way. But it does provide two benefits:

One, the pattern makes it easy to recall how ThinFire should be positioned in the kiln. Just remember, logo side down against the shelf; plain side up, against the glass—to create the smoothest, cleanest-possible finish for your work.

Two, the pattern serves as our assurance that Bullseye ThinFire is tested, tried and true.
It’s the highest-quality shelf paper on the market—the one that doesn’t shrink in the kiln.

Compare the three most common shelf prep for FUSING
Kiln Wash Thin Fire Paper Thicker Fiber Materials
Slightly textured - also it has a tendency to want to be a streaky texture Glossier finish on the shelf side of your finished project Most textured (which might be a good thing)
No binder Less binder burnout odor More binder burnout
Big prep procedure - mixing and applying and drying No Prep - Just place on shelf No Prep - Just place on shelf
One time use - supposed to put on fresh coating each firing One time use Could be used several times
least expensive a little more expensive the most expensive
Compared to kiln washes, ThinFire reduces shelf preparation time and improves surface release qualities. The one time use paper will decinagrate which is then easily deposed of.

Usage, Clean up Safety

Use ThinFire as you would any lighter weight ceramic fiber material on the kiln shelf. A single layer of paper will prevent molten glass from sticking to your shelf at full fusing temperatures (1450°-1500° Fahrenheit).
  • Edge Curl: ThinFire is so light weight that it is easily affected by glass movement and will sometimes pull into or curl over the glass perimeter at maximum firing temperature. Contact with the top surface of the glass will leave and undesirable haze. To prevent edge curl, weight the outer corners of the paper with small pieces of glass or broken kiln shelf as needed.
  • Burnout: During firing the organic binder will burn out of the paper. The paper will turn completely black and then back to white again. You may smell the burn out process. It is harmless.
  • Applications: ThinFire has been used with excellent results in Sundance's Teaching studios for many flat fusing applications. As with any new material, we recommend that you test the product for suitability to your project when working with experimental techniques, forms or temperature ranges.
  • Ultimate Smoothness: Fire glass against the smoothest side of Thinfire for best results. To identify the smoothest side, run your finger across each side, and listen to the sound. The quieter side is the smoothest side.
  • Clean up and safety: On firing, ThinFire disintegrates to a dusty tissue. As with all ceramic fiber material, avoid breathing residual dust. Wear a respirator (NIOSH approved for dusts) during disposal. If possible, clean shelves with a HEPA vacuum.
